Covid Response: London Makes Temporary Street Changes Permanent

On 8 June 2020, CNCA members discussed how cities are making temporary COVID policies permanent.

In London, Mayor Khan unveiled his Streetspace programme to accommodate a ten-fold increase in cycling and five-fold increase in walking as the city recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic and as lockdown restrictions are eased.

Streetspace for London is creating new bike lanes, widening sidewalks and establishing low-traffic corridors. These changes will support public health and reduce emissions by:

  • Making it easier and safer for people to maintain social distancing
  • Helping people walk and cycle more
  • Relieving road congestion
  • Avoiding a sharp increase in private car use that could gridlock roadways for essential and emergency services
  • Keeping the air clean
