In April of 2024, Incheon Metropolitan City established a comprehensive plan to attain carbon neutrality by 2045. The City plans to phase out coal-fired power plants, which account for 49% of total GHG emissions, by 2044. To fill the gap, Incheon has strengthened energy transition strategies, focusing on new renewable energies such as solar and wind power and hydrogen energy. It has been pursuing decarbonization in the areas of transportation, building and industry. Additionally, hydrogen-based infrastructure has been built to reduce carbon emissions. Furthermore, nature-based carbon absorption strategies are implemented, including expansion of urban green spaces and marine halophyte habitats.
To realize carbon neutrality with the community, Incheon has established the ‘City-wide Carbon Neutral Citizen Action Campaign’ to encourage citizen participation. The City has offered education, promotion and every day implementation programs. In addition, it has increased green mobility and eco-friendly technologies through supply of electric and hydrogen vehicles, expansion of public transportation infrastructures and improvement of energy efficiency in building and industry sectors.
In international cooperation, the City has enhanced its global standing with the hosting of Green Climate Fund Headquarters. Further, the IPCC’s Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C was approved in Incheon. Focus has been on information exchanges through the hosting of diverse international conferences, such as Korea Global Adaptation Week 2023 and annually-held International Conference on Climate Finance & Industry and International Forum on Low carbon Cities. Working together with overseas cities and international organizations, Incheon is dedicated to contributing to global efforts and fulfilling responsibilities in responding to climate change.
