Food for Sustainable Communities (Circular Food Community Project)
City Lead: London
Year Completed: 2025
Through project partner ReLondon—a partnership of the Mayor of London and the London boroughs to transform the city into a leading low-carbon circular economy—the City developed a replicable model for a circular food community in the Borough of Islington by embedding emission reduction interventions that increase residents’ consumption of low carbon food and reduce food waste.
Outcomes:
- Local skills fostered, food poverty tackled, and community wellbeing strengthened through community outreach and 11 co-created interventions—including a community café, cooking classes, surplus food redistribution, and school training.
- Key learnings captured to inform other global cities.
Outputs:
- Circular Food Research Final Report: Global research and analysis to identify and benchmark interventions to reduce household food waste and increase consumption of low-carbon food.
- Circular Food Community Project Final Evaluation Presentation Findings: Qualitative findings on interventions for citizens, businesses, and schools, and insights on citizen re-engagement.
